How else could Netflix improve recommendations?

This contest has produced some methods that give a better RMSE score to the predicted ratings of users of Netflix.  I would like to submit that although that is a good thing, there are other things they could do that would produce better recommendations for their users.

My first observation (made here before) is that the contest did not use a lot of data that users had supplied in their previous ratings -- the category of "not interested".

My second observation is that it may well be that the RMSE score improvements are coming from the middle of the users ratings -- mean, median or mode, take your pick.  However, what would be of most benefit to Netflix is for them to be able to make reliable recommendations about movies that people will rate as 4s or 5s.   Most such recommendations should not care about predictions of movies that the user would rate as a 1 or 2 or even as a 3.

For example, instead of using RMSE  which is based upon (score - prediction)**2, how about using a score based upon weight(score) * (score -prediction)**2, where weight might be linear, quadratic or even exponential.  Such scores would give more strength to the highly rated movies than is being currently done.

A related third observation is that when Netflix shows a user the "recommended movies", it show him the top movies, even if the predicted score is less than 4.0.   Because I am fairly frugal with handing out 4 or 5 ratings, Netflix never recommends any movie to me in the general category.

Hey, don't give them more ideas!  They didn't offer any more money!  lol

Actually, since I retired from Government service about 15 years ago, I have been a consultant for a variety of clients.  Business is a bit slow now though, which is why I've had time to work on this contest.

One of the first things I learned as a consultant was that the client often has the wrong idea about how to solve a problem.  The best thing that the consultant can do for them is to teach them how to look at the problem in different directions.

I have a way to improve the netflix experience. Just add a shuffle button on Your Queue. I have lots of movies on my list and they are hard to shuffle around when you are trying to get a veriety. I don't want to get all of one kind of movie at a time so i have to do it one by one.

It is not really hard to move them around.  There is a box with their ordinal in it.  Change the number on one or more movies and hit a rearrange button.

Granted, not a random shuffle -- but not hard either.

Re: How else could Netflix improve recommendations?

I have 135 movies in my queue. I would find it to be eaier to just shuffle so I don't have to keep searching back and fort for the movies I want or changing the numbers of them. I have not watched a lot of miovies in my lifetime so I have a lot of catching up to do. A shuffle button would be much easier than trying to figure out where to put what.
