Re: Contacting the Administrators

Is it possible to change teams, or especially merge teams?  Some I know already rushed to register and we may consider working together...  Also I don't recall in the rules that any person is limited to one participation (OK, i probably missed it but that's usually the case in contests :-) )

The rules state:

"Registration

To participate in the Contest, Participants must accurately and truthfully complete the Participant registration information request online at www.NetflixPrize.com (the "Site"). To register, Participants must provide a team name, a list of all team Participants, and identify the team leader, providing each Participant’s full name, and e-mail address, affiliation, if any, and country. In addition, each Participant must consent to be bound by these Rules. Individuals may be members of multiple teams. "

Goodluck.

Re: Contacting the Administrators

"Individuals may be members of multiple teams. "

In another thread, someone reports he was not allowed to do this - he was team leader of 8 teams at one point before being reduced to one team ... Please clarify the rule. Am I allowed two teams in each of which I am the only member? I am allowed to be in two teams in both of which I am the team leader, but which also include other members? Am I allowed two teams in one fo which I'm the team leader and in the other I am not?

Re: Contacting the Administrators

Why is there no way to get the format for the data without downloading the whole dataset?
I'd like to write some code *before* I download all the data!

I complained about that here. I think the information you want is in the readme file, which you can find here.

Re: Contacting the Administrators

This was asked a couple of times, most recently in.  Don't believe there was ever an official response, though.

Cool, so pretend like the contest starts January 2nd for the purposes of the 30 day rule.

Re: Contacting the Administrators

Question, I am building a webpage (so when I get on the leaderboard I'll have a place for people to go).  Is there any problem with putting the text, "Netflixprize" contest, on it?  In other words the page might be titled, "Eudaous's Netflixprize adventure!" or something like that.  I might also have the words and a link to "www.Netflixprize.com", or the leaderboard, or whatever.

Am I ok to do this?  Do I need anything special, verbage, permission, etc?  Things I shouldn't do?

Thanks.

Re: Contacting the Administrators

Hello,

I just created a new Team "LDA_Running" and have added myself and one other person.

I mistakenly added someone to my other team "OutStep" and need to know how to remove them?

Since we are developing 2 different types of specialized programs, I figured that I needed to have 2 teams. One "OutStep" for myself and the other one for more than one member.

Can you please advise?
Thanks,
Lonnie Cumberland

Re: Contacting the Administrators

Why not use bzip2 as the compression format?
Using bzip2 the file would be smaller, and we
suffer less while uploading the results...

Re: Contacting the Administrators

Hi, This may have been asked before but I don't think so...

In building predictive models I often find myself deriving smooth curves from noisy raw data in the dataset. The are some mathematical ways of doing this, such as bezier curves. However, sometimes when I can't quite get the curve I want mathematically, and it's a one-off (so I don't have to repeat the operations one per movie and/or customer) I'll just print out a graph of the raw noisy data and draw a best fit curve with a pencil. I can then manually type in points on the pencil line curve into my source code.

Now if I were to win and this manual drawing of a curve was part of my submitted technique, would that be accepted?

Thanks,

Bored Bitless!

Re: Contacting the Administrators

Yes, of course we'd accept it.  But we'd also expect your description to come in the form of a hand-illustrated vellum manuscript bound in the finest leather smile If you win we'll add the semi-precious stones to the cover.  Good luck with all that.

Ah that's nice to know as I'm running low on semi-precious stones right now wink

FYI, the E-mail link is only available for signed-in forum members. And it appears to be the only way to email Netflix Prize.

Re: Contacting the Administrators

I have a question about judging potential prize submissions.

I asked it in General Discussion here:
http://www.netflixprize.com//community/ … hp?id=1432

but would really appreciate an official response.
